ONGOING ABOLITION
In addition to honoring the work of antislavery abolitionists,
NAHOF strives to complete the second and ongoing abolition -
the moral conviction to end racism.
What does "anti-racism" mean?
"Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices and attitudes, so that power is redistributed and shared equitably." - NAC International Perspectives: Women and Global Solidarity
"Anti-racism" is different from "not being racist". Because media representations, social systems and institutions enfranchise white people and entrench racism, being simply "not racist" allows the continuation of these racist ideas and structures. This means that inaction on racial inequity, or the choice to remain silent on race, enables racism to continue. Anti-racism work focuses on how to actively deconstruct and dismantle racist ideas and structures.

How does NAHOF advance anti-racist work?
First and foremost, the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum supports education about anti-racism. The first step toward anti-racist work is raising awareness and providing people with the knowledge and confidence to talk about anti-racism with others. We know that delving into anti-racist work for the first time can be intimidating. The most common fears we hear about speaking out against racism for the first time concern worries about not knowing enough, saying the wrong thing or not knowing where to start. To help address these concerns and to support anti-racism work, we have compiled an anti-racism resource list - check it out here!
How can I support NAHOF's anti-racist work?
- Educate yourself about anti-racism. Our anti-racism resource list is a good place to start.
- Talk to those in your immediate circle about anti-racism. Our anti-racism resource list will give you the information and confidence you need to start talking about race. In particular, check out Helpful Rebuttals to Racist Talking Points for some help.
